Roadside Attractions Picking Up Jeff Nichols' Cannes Favorite 'Mud'

  Finally - hooray! This was one of my top favorite films coming out of the Cannes Film Festival earlier this summer (review), and I was expecting it to get picked up quickly, but it never did. Thompson on Hollywood is finally reporting that Roadside Attractions, with Lionsgate, are "in discussions" to acquire the US distribution rights to Take Shelter director Jeff Nichols' new film Mud, starring Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Michael Shannon, Jacob Lofland and Tye Sheridan fromThe Tree of Life. I'm very glad to hear it's finally getting picked up by someone, as this is an indie gem and deserves to be seen! Read on. Mud stars Tye Sheridan and Jacob Lofland as Ellis and Neckbone, two young boys living on the Mississippi who encounter a drifter with a sordid past, played by Matthew McConaughey. In my review, I described it as "Stand By Me of the Southern Wild because it's a blend of the classic Stand By Me and the charm of Sundance hit Beasts of the Southern Wild." The official description calls Mud "a riveting mystery thriller set in American river country with a stellar cast by one of our greatest new cinematic voices."
